The children and I went on to visit many other shops, but I never got a chance to spend any money at them. Every time I insisted that I should pay, and every time the local townspeople would insist back that I shouldn’t, out of consideration for the shopkeepers. Many times did I taste defeat—and snacks—at the hands of the townspeople.

The kids and I stuffed ourselves until we were full, then they thanked me and returned home. They rubbed their eyes as they went, clearly ready for nap time.

With some luck, I managed to slip away from the throngs of townspeople and went down an alley in search of another new store. The townspeople I passed on the way there eyed my red hair with curiosity but quickly averted their eyes without saying anything. It appeared rumors of me being the Great Saint’s reincarnation hadn’t spread everywhere quite yet. Maybe now I’d have a proper chance to spend some money. I’d just begun to look around when I made eye contact with a man in his thirties.

The man gasped. Then he drew near and pointed farther down the alley. “You can find something nice to eat down there.”

I looked down the alley, but there didn’t seem to be anything resembling a store around. Cyril had warned me not to follow strangers promising food, though, so I grew wary. I shook my head. “Thank you very much, but I’m actually looking to rest a bit right now.”

The man snatched my arm impatiently. “S-somebody’s sick! They need help!”

What?! Someone’s sick?! That changes everything!

I ran through the alley together with the man and bounded around the corner to find a group of men waiting. Puzzlingly, they all appeared to be in fine health.

But you can’t always tell from a glance, right? Just then, a hand reached out and covered my mouth. I looked down, shocked—a man was pressing a cloth against my mouth.

A second passed. Another second. Nothing happened. A third second went by…

“Wh-why isn’t she losing consciousness?!” exclaimed the man holding the cloth to my mouth. He looked around at the other men. “The paralysis effect on this should be instant!” He snarled.

Always helps to be a saint, I thought. Weak status ailments just rolled right off me.

I pushed the hand from my mouth and looked each of the five men squarely in the face. “So, where is this sick person? Or has there been a mistake? If you’re all healthy, may I please continue my shopping?”

“Uh, no, there is a sick person, but, um…”

“Well…”

The men seemed to hesitate for some reason.

I tilted my head. “I assume you guys were trying to knock me unconscious and bring me to wherever this sick person is, right? I appreciate it, but I can walk there by myself. You could just show me the way like normal. Yes, I’m light as a feather, so I can understand why you’d consider carrying me, but I really can just walk myself.”

There I was, slipping a mention of my weight in.
